Hi Everyone. Farmer Steve here. I wanted to give you a quick update on what I’ve been doing since I came aboard.
I’ve begun ordering seeds and plan to grow over 40 crops and over 100 varieties. Many will be familiar favorites such as lettuce, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Others may be new and exciting to you such as kale, kohlrabi, collards, tomatillos and turnips. As a “Pioneer member” you know that the farm will not be as productive in the first season as it will be in the coming years. That said, here are some ideas of what you can expect for your share.
| Projected early season: | Projected mid-season: | Projected late season: |
| 1 head of lettuce | 1 head of lettuce | 1 head of lettuce |
| 1 bunch of arugula | 1 bunch chard | 1 bunch spinach |
| 1 bunch bok choy | 1 bunch basil | 1 bunch dill |
| 1 bunch of carrots | 3 lbs tomatoes | 1 bunch kale |
| 1 bunch of radishes | 1 lb broccoli | 1 bunch collards |
| 1 bunch beets | 3 lbs summer squash | 1 bunch leeks |
| 1 bunch scallions | 2 lbs peppers | 1 bunch kohlrabi |
| 1 bag snow peas | 3 medium onions | 3 lbs winter squash |
We are hoping to have our first share available in early June, and the final share in mid October. The size of the share will vary with the yield and the bounty, with mid-season shares typically being slightly larger than early and late season shares. We all have much to learn in this first season of growing at Massaro Farm, and much to be excited about. I am so grateful that you have decided to be a part of the CSA.
